ガーナ、法律人権プロジェクト、スタッフと議論するプロジェクトアブロードボランティア

As a Law intern in Ghana with Projects Abroad, you can gain international experience in the field of law by working in local law firms or at the Ghana Legal Aid Scheme. Through our partnerships with these local advocacy firms and governmental legal aid scheme, interns with legal experience are given the opportunity to resolve complaints and specific issues for people revealed as victims.

As part of the work conducted by our staff in the Projects Abroad Human Rights Office, we aim to support legal resolve for human rights disputes. Interns are supported by local staff from the Projects Abroad Human Rights Office at their law placements.

In addition to those placements, Law interns may also be able to offer their wider expertise and legal knowledge to any one of our Social Justice projects being run by interns on the Law & Human Rights internship.

These internships are ideal if you are a law student or a graduate seeking practical experience in a different cultural setting. Additionally, it offers interns the chance to gain exposure to Ghanaian laws in practice, legal resolve procedures, and current human rights issues in Ghana. The experiences that you gain in Ghana will let your resume stand out from the competition.

西アフリカのガーナで法律インターンとして海外経験を得よう

As a Law intern in Ghana, you can expect to be busy working at a full-time placement, requiring interest with a strong interest in the law and a passion for affecting change. You will work alongside local lawyers, paralegals, and clerks in a professional environment and will be expected to act accordingly.

You may encounter any number of administrative legal tasks similar to those found in a law firm in North America. This can include registering new applicants, conducting interviews, attending court and mediations, drafting legal documents and affidavits, and conducting legal research. The difference is that you will be dealing with clients of a very different culture and socio-economic background and the subject matters encountered will reflect this.

The type of cases dealt with varies depending on your placement, but often includes:

  • Constitutional matters
  • Probate
  • Landlord/tenant
  • Family, custody, child maintenance, and matrimonial disputes
  • Criminal
  • Property
  • Contract
  • Employment
  • Personal injury/negligence
  • Other cases deserving of legal aid

We typically send experienced lawyers or final year law students on our Law placement in Ghana, although it is possible for less experienced law students to apply for this internship. However, the amount and complexity of the work assigned to interns will depend on their skill and experience, as well as the unpredictable nature of the cases that are taken on each week.

In addition to your full time placement it is possible to assist our interns in the Law & Human Rights Project. You will be able to offer your legal knowledge and experience to enhance the work they do. This can include conducting in-house seminars, assisting with office research, attending one of our advocacy and outreach sessions, or assisting in training/ mediation in more community-based dispute resolution settings.

The availability of this work will depend on our current Human Rights projects as well as the interns’ experience, interests, and personal schedule. Priority will always be placed on their external placement needs. Those wishing to be involved in such work should communicate this preference as early as possible in the application process.

If you have qualifications or experience in this field then we can make use of your skills. Read more about the opportunities for skilled volunteers in Ghana.
