Samoa has one of the highest obesity rates in the world, putting many Samoans at risk of developing cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and other illnesses associated with a poor diet. Projects Abroad’s Nutrition program aims to support the local community in making healthy lifestyle decisions. As a professional volunteer on this project, you can help facilitate a positive change in attitudes towards food and exercise, which will help reduce the number of preventable illnesses associated with poor nutrition.
Here you will find answers to the following questions:
How can volunteer Dietician/Nutritionist help in Samoa?
Projects Abroad will design a program to target areas of need based on your experience and qualifications.
You will work in cooperation with the Ministry of Health who coordinate community outreach programs in and around the city of Apia. As a volunteer nutritionist you will also spend your time at schools, educating and advising teachers, students, and parents on ways in which they can improve their health by adopting healthier eating habits. During these community group sessions you will give advice on meal planning, exercise plans, or even creating vegetable gardens.
What will I gain from this project?
While working in a school or communities in Samoa, you will gain a broader understanding of the health threats faced by people in Samoa, compared to your home country. You will also benefit from discussions with fellow professionals and have the opportunity to share your expertise. Locals will be eager to hear about your life back home, your family, and your friends. We believe that this cultural exchange helps our volunteers gain a new perspective on life.
What will be provided?
We have over 25 years’ experience of running volunteer projects. We provide you with the following support to make sure your time in Samoa is successful and enjoyable:
- Safe accommodation with a Samoan family close to your project.
- Friendly and dedicated local staff available to help 24 hours a day.
- A member of staff to meet you at the airport when you arrive.
- Comprehensive medical and travel insurance.
What skills or qualifications do I need?
This Nutrition project in Samoa is well-suited for qualified nutritionists or those with qualifications in other health-related fields such as nursing or public health experts. If you have not yet completed your studies but are interested in this project, please contact us for more information as we may still be able to find a role for you.
You can join this project for two or three weeks if you don't have time to join us for four weeks or more. This project has been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for short term volunteering for both the host community and the volunteer. Although you will gain a valuable cultural insight and work intensely within the local community please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone volunteering for a longer period.
