This volunteer medical project helps treat patients in a hospital in Mandeville, Jamaica.

Jamaica has a decent standard of healthcare. However, it lacks specialist staff in key areas such as midwifery. You can help look after mothers and babies as well as helping local staff.

This project is perfect for anyone qualified considering volunteer work abroad or midwives on a career break. You can contribute to the development of healthcare in Jamaica.

Here you will find answers to the following questions:

How can volunteer midwives help in Jamaica?

What will I gain from this project?

What will Projects Abroad PRO provide?

What skills or qualifications do I need?

How can volunteer midwives help in Jamaica?

You can use your knowledge and training to help local staff as a volunteer midwife. You can work on tasks such as:

  • Helping existing staff to treat patients, including:
    • Diagnosing, monitoring and examining women during pregnancy.
    • Developing, assessing and evaluating individual programs of care.
    • Supervising and assisting mothers in labor.
  • Producing literature for new parents giving advice on the daily care of the baby, including breast feeding, bathing and making up feeds.
  • Helping with medical outreach programs within nearby towns and villages.
  • Observing and assessing the work of local trainee midwives.

The Mandeville Regional Hospital (MRH) has a capacity of 164 beds. It offers a variety of specialist treatments and is Mandeville’s main hospital. You will be expected to work at least 5 hours a day from Monday to Friday.

Alternative hospitals and medical clinics are available if you have a specific area of interest that is not offered at MRH.

This project runs all year round. You decide how much time you can spare and we will help you get the most out of it.

What will I gain from this project?

This voluntary work abroad will allow you to gain experience from working with professionals in the developing world. You will be able to share ideas and learn from fellow staff. You will also get to see how mothers and babies are cared for in Jamaica. You will have to work under pressure and improve your abilities as a midwife.

You will spend a lot of time with local staff and patients. This will teach you about their culture and way of life. They will all want to hear about your life back home and your family and friends. We call this "cultural exchange" and we think it helps our volunteers gain a new perspective on life.

What will Projects Abroad PRO provide?

We have over 25 years’ experience of running volunteer projects. We provide you with the following support to make sure your time in Jamaica is successful and enjoyable:

  • Safe accommodation with a Jamaican family close to your project.
  • Friendly and dedicated local staff available to help 24 hours a day.
  • A member of staff to meet you at the airport when you arrive.
  • Comprehensive medical and travel insurance.

What skills or qualifications do I need?

You need to be fully qualified as a midwife, have a relevant license to practice in your country of residence and 2 years of experience

Volunteers also need to obtain a temporary license from the Jamaican Medical Association in order to treat patients independently. This process normally takes around 3 months.

You can apply for the license before you leave. Our staff in Jamaica will give you full support, including the required forms and how to fill them in.

Please contact us if you think your knowledge may be useful on this project but do not have the required qualifications.

Additional Registration Fees for certified Midwives

If you are a midwife participating in a Project for Professionals, you will be required to register with the local medical council before your arrival. You will be required to pay an extra licensing fee, which is currently US$50.
