The Business Entrepreneurship Center was created to provide practical experience for disadvantaged students of the Tertiary School in Business Administration College. It has since grown to help start-ups and has advised over 100 grassroots businesses in townships over the past three years.
As a business enterprise intern you will be asked to help achieve the aims of the Entrepreneurship Center in a number of ways. Interns could find themselves involved in numerous tasks such as:
- Working with business students from disadvantaged communities on community leadership projects as part of their curriculum
- Assessing and carefully selecting entrepreneurs with the potential to start and successfully run a business
- Training entrepreneurs from disadvantaged townships to build-up the businesses
- Planning the entrepreneurs’ ventures and nurture the projects in the critical start-up phase or early stages
- Honing the entrepreneurs’ managerial skills as the business grows
- Helping the entrepreneurs to become independent as they start to succeed in the marketplace
This project requires applicants to be enrolled in their final year of a Business, Marketing, Advertising, Communications, or Law university course and requires a commitment of at least two months on the internship.
As an intern, you will learn to work in an emerging market with grassroots entrepreneurs. Interns work alongside South Africans who were previously disadvantaged due to the political history of South Africa. This internship offers the chance to learn about South African culture, entrepreneurship and business all in one experience.
Your South African host family is located in the modern and safe community of Pinelands, which is a five-minute walk from the Entrepreneurship Center. Most of the entrepreneurs you’ll be working with arrive at the center by train, also giving you easy access to the Cape Town city center.
